This program is designed to introduce the local concrete industry to the state of the art non-destructive testing methods available for evaluating concrete. Non-destructive testing has saved million of dollars worth of demolition and replacement of questionable concrete. Non-destructive testing has expedited construction schedules and been responsible for millions of dollars worth of early completion bonuses. Come to this ACI seminar and find out how. After the seminar there will be hands-on demonstrations of state of the art non-destructive testing equipment including,

  • Low frequency ultrasonic pulse velocity testing
  • Impact Echo Testing
  • Penetrating Radar
  • Other Current State of the Art Methods

Mr. Olson is an internationally recognized expert in the nondestructive testing field. He has over 24 years of experience in the areas of geotechnical and materials engineering with specialization in nondestructive testing and evaluation for the construction industry. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute Committee 228 on Nondestructive testing and Chairman of the International Concrete Repair Institute Evaluation Committee. He is currently teaching an ASCE short course on condition evaluation of concrete and masonry structures. He has taught short courses in NDT&E at Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin. He has conducted and/or reviewed as principal engineer over 1,500 NDT&E projects to investigate conditions of concrete bridges, dams, tunnels, buildings, deep foundations, etc. Many of the projects include either quality assurance of deep foundations or length determinations of deep foundations. He was the principal investigator for NCHRP research project 21-5 for the determination of unknown bridge foundations, as well as other deep foundation research. Mr. Olson’s experience and expertise has led to the development and sales of state of the art NDT&E instruments through Olson Instruments, Inc. Mr. Olson will be providing hands on demonstrations of non-destructive testing and evaluation methods. More information is available about Olson Engineering and Olson Instruments at www.olsonengineering.com and www.olsoninstruments.com

The seminar will compare various types of non-destructive testing with common destructive methods such as coring and selective demolition. During the hands-on demonstrations we will expose much of the mystery and “black box” technology that surrounds the non-destructive testing field. The capabilities and limitation of the various systems will be discussed. You will no longer have to take non-destructive testing results on faith; you will be able to understand the applicability and the methods used.
