October 2006 President’s Message

This month we were fortunate to have a nationally recognized speaker at our September dinner meeting. Tony Kojundic of Elkam Materials gave us an excellent seminar on high performance concrete. In his one-hour presentation, he offered new concepts and information on making high performance concrete with little or no cracking.

With the number of years I have in the concrete business, I am sorry to admit that I qualify as an old dog. For the others out there who might also qualify for this honor, and for our younger members who think you have seen it all, and heard it all, and there is little new to learn about concrete, think again! There were new concepts presented by Mr. Kojundic that we could use for our clients, in our concrete projects, and in our concrete mixes today! Utilizing these materials and practices enhances concrete performance and helps to keep it as the most widely used construction material in the world.

Next month we have our annual golf tournament, which is always well attended and an excellent chance to network among others in the concrete industry. Our next dinner meeting will be a sort of CSI - San Diego as several of our member testing labs will present their locally available equipment that can be used to do forensic investigation on concrete. You will not want to miss this one. If you have ever had a construction project go south, you know the anxiety there can be until the cause and cure are discovered. We are fortunate to have world-class forensic equipment and abilities in our county that can minimize the agony.

Finally, this month had the 5-year anniversary of 9/11. Let us never forget the day. And let us never forget the men and women in uniform who protect us. I ask you to take a moment and offer a prayer to them: “Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.
