Presented by: Dave Flax- The Euclid Chemical Company

Presentation Outline:

This presentation will cover a great many topics that affect the shrinkage, cracking, and curling of concrete. Typical concrete shrinks about 0.06%. In this presentation the emphasis for the concrete mix design will be on reducing the shrinkage to 0.04%, 0.02% or even 0.00% by the use of the proper coarse aggregate size & quantity and by the use of shrinkage reducing & shrinkage compensating admixtures. We will cover how to write a spec to achieve these low shrinkage percentages.

But if we don’t want cracks and curling, getting the mix design right is only the beginning. We will also look at what happens after the concrete is placed including the use of an evaporation retarder, proper curing, joint layout, sawcutting, etc.

There are many tests that are typically run on the concrete at the jobsite and in the weeks following, but none of them tell us right there at the job site in real time if concrete is likely to shrink, crack, and curl. We will cover the one job site test method that will provide that critical information immediately.

Biographical sketch:

The presenter: Dave Flax of The Euclid Chemical Company has a Civil Engineering Degree from RPIand over 35 years experience as a field engineer, a contractor, and a researcher with the Corps of Engineers. He has earned his CDTand CCPR from CSI. He has specialized in concrete and has had dozens of articles published. He was awarded the Extra Yard Award by the SCCP for his 30+ years of service to the concrete industry. He is on a number of national organization committees including the “Methods and Materials”, “Guide Specifications”, and “Repair of Construction Defects” committees. He has spoken on this topic and others at The World of Concrete and numerous organizations.

“What’s new with the San Diego Chapter of ACI you ask??? Lots of things…

I’m very encouraged with the energy and enthusiasm I see in both the hard working individuals on the Board of Trustee and the membership in general. There seems to be a real “buzz” in the air about wanting to take our Chapter to the next level. There are several new initiatives that are in their infancy right now but expect to see change in many aspects of our program. By the end of the year we hope to roll out a new Membership Program, an updated and more hip Website and a retooled Monthly Newsletter to name a few.

Paramounton our list of initiatives is a desire to provide to you the best programs relating to our industry that we can. In order to do this I ask your help in coming up with an agenda of programs for us to sponsor this next year. If there are topics you think either you or others in your circle would benefit from please contact me, Heather or one of the other board members and we’ll see what we can do to accommodate your request. We are here to assist in promoting our industry any way we can…

Speaking of programs, a big shout out to Superior Ready Mix. They hosted last month’s plant tour of their facilities inMissionValley. Everyone I spoke with came away from the tour with a new appreciation for both the ready mix and quarry operations. Thanks so much for putting this on guys.

Coming up we have two cool events that I’m sure all of you will want to be part of. First off, the Annual ACIGolf Tournament is Monday October the 17th at Twin Oaks Golf Course. Everyone hates to go to work on Monday so come on out, get some fresh air and chase those little white balls with us.

Lastly, if you’re interested in getting a “behind-the-scenes” look at one of the largest architectural concrete projects in San Diego’s history join us on Thursday, November 3rd for a tour of the San Diego New Central Library project. World renowned architect, Rob Quigley, will give a presentation on “concrete in architecture” followed by a discussion by the contractor on form systems and challenges encountered with mass concrete and unique architectural elements. A tour of the job will follow the presentations. I’ve been down to the project site and I guarantee this is one program you don’t want to miss!”

Respectfully,

Mike Archibald

2011-2012 President

Biographical sketches:

Tony Kojundic is a Director of the Silica Fume Association, and for the past 28 years, Business

Manager of Elkem Materials, the largest supplier of silica fume in the world. He’s a Fellow at the

American Concrete Institute (ACI), and serves on several ACI and ASTM technical committees. Tony’s also a member of the Transportation Research Board, The National Concrete Bridge Council and the Concrete Industry’s Joint Sustainable Initiative. Through a cooperative agreement between the SFA and the FHWA, Tony’s been active in transferring HPC technology to state DOTs, as well as directing other SFA technical programs.

Outline:

How do you increase the strength of concrete? How do you meet the demands of construction

and comply with the new CALTRANS Sect. 90 that requires the use of SCMs to produce concretes

with a lower CO2 foot-print?

Attendees to the June 14th ACI meeting will learn the answers, and much more. This presentation is focused on the increasing use of SCMs in today’s sustainable concrete construction. Silica fume has been used for many years to improve concrete performance, but was seldom used as a cement replacement. Today’s sustainable concrete proportions requires low cement contents, and the use of larger amounts of SCMs, such as fly ash and slag. These SCMs are slow to produce strength and can compromise performance and affect construction practices. Silica fume, a 100% pre-consumer waste material as defined by LEED, is being used in ternary cementitious mixtures to make-up for early strength losses that results from using large amounts of other SCMs, without comprising performance.

Download Flyer

The presentation will show how the new CALTRANS Sect 90 requirements as well as other LEED oriented specifications can be met while maintaining and/or improving construction schedules.
