Pervious concrete is a European import first used in Florida and the Southeastern United States to control and mitigate the effects of rain storms. As the US Environmental Protection Agency has tightened the requirements for the discharge of domestic and storm run-off, pervious concrete has gained a wider acceptance across the United States. It is now used across the Sun Belt and as far north as the Rust Belt states of Ohio and Indiana. On the West Coast, pervious concrete has been used from Florida to California to Nevada. San Diego leads the Southern California region in the number of significant projects. This program will review the basics of pervious concrete and look at the changes in placement technology that have evolved in the last year. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s Pervious Concrete Finisher and Technician certification will also be presented.

David J. Akers, R.C.E., FACI, Senior Engineer for the California Nevada Cement Promotion Council, provides technical assistance and training for pervious concrete and other cement-based products. His San Diego concrete experience goes back to 1971 as a lab tech for Testing Engineers. In the intervening years Akers consulted on a nuclear reactor in Istanbul, Turkey and an overhaul facility in Veracruz, Mexico. He is a twice former president of the San Diego International Chapter of ACI and is active on national committees dealing with pervious concrete, strength evaluation, and transportation inspector certification.
